Hiking the Ancient Forests of British Columbia & Washington
Published in Paperback by Lone Pine Publishing (June, 2003)
Author: Randy Stoltmann
Average review score:

Very Informative
This book has great pictures and maps of most of the trails it discusses, and for each trail, there is a description about the area it is in, how to get to it, and information about the hike along the way. Plus it mentions the status of the area, whether it is protected or not. All in all it's a great book for information about hiking in old growth and it should be a must have for anyone planning a trip to this area.

His pride, our fall : recovering from the Trudeau revolution
Published in Unknown Binding by Key Porter Books ()
Author: Kenneth McDonald
Average review score:

Finally, some truth about Trudeau.
Since the death of former Prime Minister Trudeau, the media has waxed poetic on the man's charm, charisma and zest for life. While not one to speak ill of the dead, I found myself sickened by the accolades accorded to the late Trudeau.

In the 70s, the Canadian dollar was worth $1.07 U.S. Today, it is worth 66 cents. This devaluation of our dollar and the corresponding devaluation Canada, are thanks largely to Trudeau's socialist rule. From multiculturalism to official bilingualism to the National Energy Policy, his policies demonstrated an arrogance and lack of fiscal responsibility that truly crippled Canada.

<> is a keenly insightful work. Its author was not blinded by his subject's charm or sex appeal; McDonald clearly describes Trudeau's legacy and, in so doing, paints a damning picture of an egotistical and self-satisfied leader. It serves as an effective cautionary tale for Canadian and international readers alike.

A History of Christianity in the United States and Canada
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (August, 1992)
Author: Mark A. Noll
Average review score:

A great college text on North American Christian history
I think that this is a very thorough, enjoyable journey through the history of Christianity in the US and Canada. He not only focuses on events such as the two American Great Awakenings, but he pauses to discuss some of the more interesting and influential Christians of the times (Anne Hutchinson, Charles Finney, George Whitefield, Francis Asbury, Fulton Sheen, Billy Graham, et al). I highly recommend this book, but it is a long book, so be prepared for many hours of reading.

The History of Grand-Pre: The Home of Longfellow's "Evangeline"
Published in Paperback by Heritage Books (August, 1991)
Author: John Frederic Herbin
Average review score:

Great book detailing in Grand-Pre post 1755 deportation
This is an excellent book written by a John Frederic Herbin who was the only Acadian descendant living in Grand-Pre when he wrote the book. He details many of the unknown happenings following the Deportation of the Acadians from their land and the cruelty they suffered. He also writes about some victories though short-lived.

Herbin is especilly remembered for purchasing that precious land where the Acadian Ancestors had lived and worship and had been deported from.. seeing to it that a memorial church would be built on the site of the old one.. and giving the land to the government of Nova Scotia - Grand-Pre then became a National Historic Site of the province.

Yet anoth argument against treating ADHD as a disorder
Francis Parkman, (1823 - 1893) author of the Oregon Trail and France & England in No. America, was born to an Ivy League family who had every expectation that he would one day grow up to become a lawyer. Because he was so high strung as a boy, he was sent off to live with a relative in the countryside and returned a naturalist.

Mr. Parkman tells the story of the pre-Revolution America and her former residents in precice terms with extensive source notes. The passion expressed by his devotion to detail and sharp acumen for selecting the right events and facts results in a rivetting, comprehensive tour of the subject.

Hockey Heroes: Paul Kariya
Published in Paperback by Greystone Publishing (01 October, 2000)
Author: Andrew Podnieks
Average review score:

A great book for young hockey fans
With the Mighty Ducks now in the Stanley Cup finals, Paul Kariya is now center stage in the hockey world. This book is a great choice for any young (8-12) hockey or sports fan. Lots of photos of the young Kariya as a kid and as a junior hockey player. Interesting text with lots of biographical details. If you have a child in your life who is dreaming of playing in the NHL one day, this is a great inspirational book about a really nice, decent player, a good role model.

A Home Across the Water
Published in Paperback by Braeward Publishing (July, 1996)
Authors: Jean W. Bradley, Donna Dean, and Jean Wardle Bradley
Average review score:

It was written with warmth and humour and I have been there.
I grew up in Newtonbrook and was delighted that someone else had fond memories too. I have made many enquiries about the area when I have returned for a visit, but it would appear there are very few who knew it as "we" knew it.

Home from the Hill
Published in Hardcover by Safari Press (August, 1999)
Authors: Fred Webb, Jim Rikhoff, and Frederick R. Webber
Average review score:

Fred Webb is Outstanding
I had, of course, heard of Fred Webb before I bought this book, but was not all that familiar with his writing. Now, however, I can say I think he's the best writer of hunting and fishing stories since Russel Annabel, Robert Ruark, or even Peter Capstick. Fred's down-to-earth style, his wonderful sense of humor, and his great insight into the people side of the outdoor sports are simply fabulous.

Some of the stories are serious and touching, some (most?) are hilarious, but all are so entertaining that when you finish one, you'll be eager to turn the page to start the next one. You may even lose all track of time (least I did -- more than once). I've read most (all?) of the stories at least twice, and my father-in-law read the whole book four times (until I finally bought him a copy for Christmas so I could get my copy back).

I eagerly look forward to meeting Fred and his son, Martin, next month (March 2000) when a friend and I travel to the frozen Arctic for a Musk Ox hunt with their guide service. I just hope we get the chance to have a drink or two with them and hear even more about Fred's adventures hunting, fishing and guiding all across Canada over the last 40 years.

This is a very fine book, and I can hardly wait for his next one, Campfire Lies of a Canadian Guide, which is due out sometime this winter.

See you in March, Fred! By the way I still laugh out loud every time I read the story about "The Day the Shotgun Jammed".
