Georgian Bay: An Illustrated History
Published in Hardcover by Boston Mills Press (April, 1995)
Authors: James P. Barry and Noel Hudson
Average review score:

A wonderful trip through a fascinating period in History.
Reading this account of History about the Georgian Bay area reminded me of many of the "oldtimers" I have met through the years on Manitoulin Island. I have been going there for 50 years and I have observed that a lot of this area has been standing still in time. Growth is very slow and rightly so, because of the inaccessibility of much of the land. The people I have met are true pioneers with the heart and spirit to match. They are hard-working people with a love of the land and a determination to make the most of what they have. We could all take a lesson from these people steeped richly in their heritage.

Gil Evans-Out of the Cool: His Life and Music
Published in Hardcover by A Cappella Books (October, 2001)
Authors: Stephanie Stein Crease and Stephanie Stein Crease
Average review score:

First-rate job
I read the manuscript before the book was published, and Stephanie has done a miraculous job. Gil Evans was an extremely private person, and there were so many things about his life that were unknown or mysterious (nobody is even sure what his name is) until Stepanie started compiling her research. This book is filled with little-known information about his early life, and the photos she has discovered are amazing. She has found long-forgotten correspondense between Evans and his friend Pete Carpenter, and has interviewed people who have never spoken about Gil before in print. If you have any interest in 20th century jazz ensemble music, this book is invaluable.

God in the Classroom: The Controversial Issue of Religion in Canada's School
Published in Hardcover by McClelland & Stewart (June, 1998)
Author: Lois Sweet
Average review score:

Controversial Treatment Of A Controversial Topic
Sweet takes on an important topic about the teaching of religion and God in the classroom. While dealing specifically with the Canadian situation, (no constitutional limit to religion in schools - in fact - five provinces allow for fully funded public Catholic schools) the situation in France and Netherlands are discussed and implications to the American education system are similar in many provinces.

The current practice of no mention of God and religion in schools is a value system in itself and educators and legislators must recognize the role this is playing in society as a whole and moral development of the young. Sweet emphasises that denominational schools are not necessarily the answer but may be better than no religion at all. She leaves the reader with the impression that teaching about religion (she calls this religious education) rather than religious indoctrination is the ideal but unlikely as many parents do not want their children exposed to other denominations or faith traditions. However not including the spiritual dimension of the child in schools is a neglected part of public education and one that must be address.

A very worthwhile read.

Gotta Hike Bc

Authors: Skye, Lake Nomad, and Skye Nomad
Average review score:

You gotta have Gotta Hike BC
My wife and I took a two-week vacation last September driving from the Rockies to Vancouver. It 's great this guidebook covers all the incredible mountain ranges in southern British Columbia, so we needed only one book. We've hiked often in the Rockies national parks of Alberta, but this book describes hikes in the Rockies that are just west of the parks. And we were usually alone on the trails. Then we hiked in the snowcapped Selkirks of Glacier NP (Canada's not the U.S.). We did a few dayhikes in the Kootenays around Nelson, BC. before heading to the Coast Mtns between Vancouver and Whistler. The hikes were all terrific. And the directions were easy to follow--to the trailheads and on the trail. Gotta Hike was fun to read in the car too. It's a hiking guide with personality. Don't miss getting this book or experiencing the best hikes in B.C.
