The Candle Cafe Cookbook: Over 150 Enlightened Recipes from New York's Renowned Vegan Restaurant
Published in Paperback by Clarkson N. Potter (22 July, 2003)
Authors: Joy Pierson, Bart Potenza, and Barbara Scott-Goodman
Average review score:

Excellent!
This cookbook is wonderful! The recipes are great and they are even easy enough for a pathetic cook like me! EXCELLENT!

All my wishes come true
Thank you to Joy and Bart for sharing your secrets with us! The Candle Cafe is always my first and last stop in New York, so I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to get a taste of heaven across the seas.

This cookbook is simple to use and the ingredients are easy to find. There is not a single dish I would skip. A wonderful variety and each one delicious (from soups to sandwiches to main dishes and sauces, and much more, ending with mouth-watering dessert). I can now invite my non-vegan friends without them looking the food skeptically. The food itself deserves 5 stars. The simplicity of the recipes another 5 stars. Even an amateur cook would be able to create a delicious meal.

I'll still be back to the Candle Cafe for the pecan chocolate chip cookies though. Maybe in your next book...

the only way to go...
Whenever I am in NYC I eat at this restaurant and thank goodness I can finally replicate the food at home. I've never met restauranteurs who take so much pride in their work, and the cookbook is a wonderful tool to continue their vegetarian mission with absolutely savory food to boot. I HIGHLY suggest this cookbook!

Celluloid Skyline: New York and the Movies
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (04 December, 2001)
Author: James Sanders
Average review score:

Brilliant and fascinating!
If there was ever a book that really needed to be written, and was then executed nearly flawlessly, this is it. Documenting the multi-threaded releationship of New York City and Hollywood (the movie biz began in NYC, and the studios' financial offices remained there; much of the writing/directing/acting talent came to Hollywood from NYC; Hollywood's backlot NYC was the setting of thousands of films; the ideas of the Hollywood versions eventually changed the real thing; etc.), this is a heckuva fun and interesting read.

Among its most fascinating parts are information on the techniques used to create believable NYC settings by the studios (e.g., the most detail I've ever seen on Hitchcock's enormous Rear Window set), examples of the vast amount of architectural and local-color detail contained in the studio's art department photographic files (more than in some of NYC's museums!), and its general architectural analysis of NYC's major iconic structures: skyscrapers, rowhouses, tenements, train stations, nightclubs, etc.

But of even greater interest are the detailed treatments of how NYC was SHOWN in films (both well-known classics and obscure titles) of different genres and eras, and how the IDEA of NYC affected the world audience, and eventually changed the city itself as new generations flocked to their city of dreams... A flip through the photographs alone is a total pleasure.

This is a great book for film buffs, fans of NYC, architecture students, and those interested in 20th century social history. (I'm all of those things, and I LOVED it!)

A loving, detailed treatment of a fascinating theme
This is a beautifully written book on the portrayal of New York City in the movies. The author is extremely knowledgeable about the architecture of NYC (in fact, he is a New York architect), about the geography and history of NYC, and about film, both in its historical and technical aspects. The writing is imaginative, lyrical, thoughtful, and intelligent--this is a labor of love that took 15 years to complete. If you have any interest at all in New York City or in film, do yourself a favor and buy this book. It made me want to go out and rent at least 60 of the films discussed in it, and it reminded me of many great films set in NYC that I've enjoyed in the past and will want to see again to note some of the characters, themes, landmarks, or stage sets that Sanders describes.

complexly considered and captivatingly cosmopolitan
This fascinating exploration of the interrelationship between the city of New York as an urban center and its portrayal throughout the history of moviemaking is filled with perceptive insight and thoughtful analysis. Highly recommended.

The Central Catskills: A Ranger's Guide to the High Peaks (Catskill Trails, Book 2)

Essential hiking info
Well written and informative. This is not only a trail guide but informs the reader of the history of the area

First rate hiking guide
This is a first-rate guide to hiking the Catskills. The author's detailed desciptions, plus maps, leave nothing to the imagination and give you the info you need to enjoy the terrain to the max.

A great guide
I was going on a hike with some friends into the Catskills and they recommended this book. They were right on to tell me about this. I really liked the detail and the maps. It made more out of the hiking than I usually get. It is well written and easy to use. I think it would be a good book for anyone going to the Catskills.

Central Park: A Photographic Excursion
Published in Hardcover by Fordham University Press (December, 2001)
Author: James C. Freund
Average review score:

It's Fabulous!
Makes a perfect Holiday gift! Shows the vibrancy and timeless appeal of New York.

Freund reveals his long time love affair with Central Park
by showing us his "park for all seasons". With his spectacular pictures of the monuments and statuary, the animals, the foliage, the rock formations, the whimisical pictures like the Bride and Groom on rollar skates, the shots of the same setting in different lights, the fountains (and my particular favorite, a sudden snow storm interrupting spring), Mr Freund takes us on a magical trip through the park. There are photos of spots you never knew existed but will long to explore. As a bonus, there are great tips for all of us amateur photographers. And "Lucy" has my vote for cutest dog of the year! Especially in these difficult times, the book is a wonderful reminder to everyone of the beauty and wonder that exists right in the middle of New York City. I couldn't stop smiling as I looked through it. Thank you, Mr. Freund for sharing "your" park with us.

What a delight!!!
This photographic excursion through Central Park is a real delight. It is just what we all need to remind us of the splendor and joy of New York. The photographs are breathtaking and the text is beautifully wirtten , with just a touch of humor and humility. After enjoying the book myself, I've ordered a number for holiday gifts. I've already heard form some of the folks I sent it to and they share my enthusiam. The real advice: if you don't get this for the holidays, buy it for yourself to get you through the January doldrums.

Christian Dior
Published in Paperback by Metropolitan Museum of Art (December, 1996)
Authors: Richard Martin, Harold Koda, N.Y.) Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, and Metropolitan Museum of Art
Average review score:

Treats Dior's work with the reverence it deserves...
Focuses on the romance and idealism of the artist and his art rather than just functioning as a clinical review of his work... as of this review date, new hardcover copies are still available from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Online Store. I've purchased two.

Magnificent! A must have!
This book is gorgeous--fabulous photography, lots of detailed shots (I love the way they concentrate on the dresses and don't feel obliged to get the manniquin's head in every shot)--glorious! Get this book now!

An Exquisite Album of Christian Dior's Work
This is a portrait album of a sampling of Christian Dior's masterpieces shown in the 1996 New York Metropolitain Museum of Art's retrospective. Every garment is beautifully captured. The detail photographs are exceptional.
But this is more than just a picture book about the 11 years Dior designed under his own name. The text offers a balance of historical costume references that Dior used in his creations against the social and economic era he designed in. It is both interesting and informative--two words that usually don't co-exist in most fashion references.
As a coffee-table book, this is a must-have for fashion afficianados. For those who can visualize and appreciate the complexity of drape and construction in some of the garments, there is no excuse not to own this book

A City Not Forsaken (Cheney Duvall, M.D., No 3)

An Amazing Book
Cholera sweeps New York City and one of the most prestigeous doctors comes down with it. She gets through it and begins to search for a cure. A marvelous story about survival, love, and faith. Read it Now!!

One of the best in the series.
I liked the book. I did not like how Cheney acted sometimes but in the end a near tragedy brings everyone closer than ever. It really is a heart felt book, I cried in it twice. I read your inquiry about the Cheney books on Amazon.com. I have read all but #5. I did not like #2 as much as the others. What do you think about Cheney and Shiloh's relationship? I love the books and read each one in a day. Read about my page deicated to the series Cheney Duvall, http://www.angelfire.com/mo/blondgirl/cheney.html

Great!
I thought that the book was descriptive and greatly recommended for women to read and men will ebjoy iy too.Dr.Cheney Duvall and nurse, handsome Shiloh Irons set out to overcome the trials of a female doctor in 1865.I thought that this was one of Morris's best book series. I will treasure it forever. I love the series so much a made a webpage for it. http://www.angelfire.com/mo/blondgirl/cheney.html The Cheney Duvall sereis is higly recommend from me and my friends. This book series is good for anyone old and young.

Cityscapes
Published in Hardcover by Columbia University Press (15 November, 2001)
Authors: Howard B. Rock, Deborah Dash Moore, and David Lobenstine
Average review score:

A trip through time
The day Cityscapes arrived brought me back to the city of my childhood and of my family and closest friends. Page after page of wonderful photographs, of history remembered and learned yet again. So many places visited with my elementary school field trips and then revisited years later on my brief stays in New York. Cityscapes offers a visual feast as well as an intellectual journey to places and people seen years ago, but only now understood in historical context.

A month or so after I fell into Cityscapes, I was delighted to host a young couple from New York. They saw the book on my coffee table and picked it up. Hours later, the two of them were still pouring over the book, learning new and fascinating slices of urban life in their recently adopted city.

Just as New York offers something for everyone, Cityscapes brings light to the eyes of anyone who opens its cover and enters its world.

The Ultimate New York
There is no place like New York, and there is no book about New York like this one. As revealing as the superb choice of photos, sketches and maps are, so is the narrative story linked with the visual: colonial seaport blossoming into a republican town, fragmented city becoming the immigrant metropolis, and finally the cosmopolitan community and global village we celebrate today. The authors have opened for us vista after vista and close-up after close-up of the poignancy and power of this magnificently restless, creative and changing Empire City.

A Beautiful Book!
The destruction of the World Trade Center has altered the New York City skyline forever and has forced people to confront a new image of New York. The next generation of New York observers will only know the Towers from their images - several magnificant ones appear in this book's final chapter.

Cityscapes is more than just a history of New York City and it is more than simply a book of beaufitul pictures. It is a unique social history that explores the timely question of how New York, the City, has been both constructed and reflected in images captured over four hundred years.

So far, this is my favorite book of New York City history.

The Collected Martin Millar
Published in Paperback by Fourth Estate Classic House (07 May, 1998)
Author: Martin Millar
Average review score:

the collected martin millar
i bought this book because of the mohawk, the faeries and the neon green puke colour. by the time i was done with it i decided that martin millar is like the guy who stands in he corner at shows smoking cigarettes while you're slamming to the music. he's the person that you're just dying, wishing that would notice you. he's the only writer who is capable of writing something we might remember when we're old and grey.

Absolutely superb
Quite simply the best book I've read. Although I wasn't convinced by the second story, 'Ruby', 'the good fairies' and 'lux the poet' had me in stitches. Hilarious, disgusting, brutal, tender. Martin Millar is a punk author with an incredibly twisted yet perfectly coherent mind. Borrow, buy or steel yourself a copy now!

original, witty and very cinematic
Ok, so being a fan of Martin Millar I loved these books. But what is gonna make you want to read them? Well let me just say that these three novels are three very different stories which together and separately draw a picture of a wonderful world. Inhabited by a fascinating range of character who are at the same time self centered and hedonistic but incredibly kind and loyal. Ruby is a little depressing but the other two will place a smile on your face so wide it will probably hurt. Anyway I'm not getting paid here so that's it. In my opinion this book is very worth it!

Come Pour the Wine: A Novel
Published in Hardcover by G K Hall & Co (July, 1981)
Author: Cynthia Freeman
Average review score:

a great story, interesting characters
I read this book a few years ago, but reread it once in a while. The story flows so well and keeps your interest. I want to say this to the other person who wrote a review for this book on August 8, 1999. Cynthia Freeman died after she wrote her last book, "Always and Forever" in 1990. I have read all of her books and am starting a collection of them.

Great book about a woman search for her heritage
Another great book by Cynthia Freeman. Janet Stevens is a young woman who moves to New York to become a model. She is naive to the ways of the world and curious about her father's Jewish roots. Eventually she gets married and has a family. Her breakup with her husband puts her back in touch with her roots. Janet goes through a learning and soul-searching process, becoming a more independent woman. She meets another man who becomes an important part of her life. I would also recommend that the publisher re-release this book. It seems that all of Cynthia Freeman's books (She wrote 10 in all) are becoming harder and harder to get. Even the public library has limited copies. I was lucky enough to find a hardback copy of this book for sale at the public library. Her books should be re-published for a new generation of readers to enjoy!

fablous book to read
I love her books so much because her words are not very vulgar or dirty as othere authors do in their books. I collect all of her books but I noticed that she had not written new book for awhile. Is there a reason for it?

Contested Terrain: A New History of Nature and People in the Adirondacks
Published in Hardcover by Syracuse Univ Pr (Trade) (June, 1997)
Author: Philip G. Terrie
Average review score:

outstanding
This is truly fine work. The relatively new genre of environmental history has produced the usual amount of academic turgidity, but many of these young historyians clearly love the land that they write abot, and have the skills to make discussions of the history of human interacton with natural systems into literature. If you enjoy Terrie, you should also pick up Bullough's Pond by Diana Muir.

This book examines the complexity of Adirondack History
The book introduces concepts and ideas that you will have thought of before, but never had actually examined in real images and arguements.

Has some great historical facts and stories.

Tells New Yorkers about what has happened in their state.

This book is much better than Schneider's.
I have always loved the Adirondacks, but after reading this astonishingly well-written book I have a new appreciation for this remarkable region. If you're a fellow Adirondacks-lover I HIGHLY recommend this book. Also, if you have time to read only one history of the Adirondacks, then this is the one to read.
