My Heart on the Yukon River: Portraits from Alaska and the Yukon
Published in Paperback by Washington State Univ Pr (October, 1997)
Average review score:

My Heart on the Yukon River is a a carefree rompMy Heart on the Yukon River is more than a collection of black and white portraits of people who live in remote places: It's the story of a woman who knew what she wanted out of life and had the courage to go after it.... In nearly every photograph, people are leaughing or smiling. No one seems to be taking themselves too seriously. Yet, Dykstra affords each person a sense of dignity. In one photograph of a woman, Suzanne Picot from Whitehorse, she poses in front of her car- painted to look like a car. Picot, who reveals in her interview that she's in love with a man who grew up on a dairy farm, is dressed like a dairy cow. She wears a black and white spotted jump suit, complete with rubber udders, horns and a cowbell necklace. Oddly, she doesn't look ridiculous. She just looks happy. For 2,000 miles, Dykstra remains optimistic and never stoops to exploit poverty, lonliness or human tragedy.... Dykstra's images are visually interesting and her text is a pleaure to read.... My Heart on the Yukon River is a a carefree romp- a lighthearted journal of a road trip Lorrie Blair for Hour Magazine

My Life With the Indians: The Story of Mary Jemison (An Incredible Journey)
Published in Library Binding by Silver Burdett Pr (February, 1998)
Average review score:

Excellent workLooking for a fair representation of how the North American Indian tribes were affected by the intrusion of Europeans? My husband and I were, following an exchange with our 8-year-old after watching "Peter Pan", where she voiced hatred for Indians, but had no reasoning behind it. This book is unique in a variety of ways; it is a true story, from a woman's perspective, of how her life was changed after being captured by the Seneca tribe. It deals in an honest, forthright manner, reflecting Jemison's original fear and ultimate embracing of her inclusion into tribal life, and the many adavantages she found therein. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an discussion of the reality of Indians in North America, and the influence of European culture on it with their young child. Well written, nice illustrations, and at 32 pages, concise.

My Luiseno Neighbors: Excerpts from a Journal Kept in Pauma Valley, Northern San Diego County, 1934-1974
Published in Paperback by Acoma Books (December, 1980)
Average review score:

My Luiseno Neighbors-A Peek Into The PastI came across this book while doing a simple research paper for a class I was taking at Palomar Comm.College. While I've lived in the Valley Center-Pauma Valley area for 13 years, I was unaware of the cultural history of the Luiseno Tribe of Indians who dominated this area for hundreds of years. This book was an eye-opener for me, telling of experiences from a white woman's point of view, as she lived in Pauma Valley for over 50 years. Her journal writings cover years of changes of the Native American tribes, but more than that, her personal relationships are a facinating documentation of how she was accepted and trusted with tribal ceremony proceedures and reflect great respect for a dying way of life and language. The beauty of this book is Mrs. Beemer's love of the land in the same way that Luisenos loved their land as it gave to them the things they gathered to exist. In addition, it is a testament to the way a person may extend themselves in friendship by watching, listening and sincerely caring for a group of people who are vastly different from one's own cultural background. This is a factual book for fourth grade students studying California history, even though it only covers the early to mid 1900's.
I'm hoping to get my own copy soon to use in the Title IX(Indian Early Childhood Education)class that I work in at Pauma Elem.School. Don't forget our local history may not include anything about the American Revolution, but a people lived here who flourished in peace, and contributed to protecting a beautiful land and its resources, while trying to maintain family relationships as their homeland was changed by more powerful newcomers. With the loss of the elder language speakers, there are no children speaking the Luiseno tongue. Dr. Eric Elliot,PhD.of Palomar Comm.College is now teaching this language at our school site, in the hope that the children may give a vital piece of their culture to their children so the ties that bind may proudly continue.

My Valley Is Icky Too
Published in Paperback by Firetrap Inc. (January, 2003)
Average review score:

A Modern MythThis existential odyssey has a little bit of everything: Sex, Mystery, a Mysterious Island Paradise, and even a hot air balloon. Ms. De Niscia's prose style is refreshingly unpretentious, yet so powerful and immediate are her characterizations that one finds oneself living the book. My Valley is Icky Too is a slim, magical volume that leaves the reader hungry for more. Don't miss it.

The Mysterious Dr. Q (Sweet Valley Twins, 102)
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (December, 1996)
Average review score:

Crazy and funny!Hypnotism is not supernatural,or about casting spells on peple..its about programming a susceptible mind...so I think that the subject was a bit wrongly portrayed in this story.I dont care though. It is really a funny funny book!Jessica, being the way she is!,decides SHE can hypnotise people just like the amazing DR.Q who is visiting their school.Hard to believe I know but Jessica stuffs up.
Elizabeth, meanwhile,is also hilarious as she stammers her way through a clumsy interview with Dr.Q trying to prove the woman a fraud.

Nahanni trailhead : a year in the northern wilderness
Published in Unknown Binding by Deneau & Greenberg ()
Average review score:

A classicI love this book and reread it every couple of years. It has always been my dream to live in the wilderness for a year, as this honeymooning couple did.
It is well and simply written, with a few maps but only disappointingly blurry pictures. There's lots of great description, including the occasional tedium of holing up for the winter, the joys they had exploring the area once spring arrived, and the terror of dealing with wolves (or was it bears?) trying to break into their cabin.
They are candid about what they did wrong and how they dealt with spending so much uninterrupted time together.
