Faceless: The Most Famous Photographer in the World
Published in Hardcover by Assouline (08 February, 2001)
Author: David Douglas Duncan
Average review score:

What a bunch of horse sh....
If Duncan would have filled the book with stories of his friendship with HCB and given us some insight we may not have found anywhere else, this book could be good. I like hearing the anecdotes of the quirks that HCB exhibited on a daily basis. I'm sure Duncan could have filled a book with interesting insights... but that is not the case here.

Fact is, he gives a few pages of blurbs and then fills this book with shots from one roll of film. Candids so to speak of HCB and his Leica. That's it. The whole book.

There is far too much [bad] photography out in the world today and some of it I respect because it is art and I even respect Duncan's photography but this book? Gads.

Here we are, us starving photographers trying to get a hold in the industry that calls so many and chooses so few.... and this book is published. Why? I know I sound resentful... well of course I do! I'm a photographer without a published book of my own! At least give me great books to look at until I can share mine with the world! :P

I think I'm going to get iPhoto and make my own books and slug them on the net. Sit down with someone for 20 minutes, snap off 20 to 30 images of them... make a book.

Give me Inferno any day. Now that (to me) is a photo book. It's a coffee table book substantial enough to be a coffee table. I would pay a month of rent for Inferno. Don't have it? Buy it today.

Don't waste your money on this one. There are far better books to waste your money on. :)

Cheers,
Zack ...

Faceless by David Douglas Duncan
Only on very rare occasions has Henri Cartier-Bresson who has spent his adult life capturing the images of others allowed himself to be photographed. Mr. Duncan's decisive five minutes with his former associate now provide a unique opportunity to see HCB in action, but I suspect that "Faceless" would not have sat still for the candids if he realized that his old friend DDD was going to blow his cover and publish the off-guard moments. One reviewer of this book notes that Mr. Duncan lost his friendship with HCB because he published these photos. Even though the proceeds from the book will go to the University of Texas, losing a friendship would not be worth this book of snapshots.

Disavowed by Cartier-Bresson
Those of you who would buy this book because you are fans of the subject should know that Mr. Cartier-Bresson has done everything he could to prevent this book from being published. It is against his wishes, and Mr. Duncan's decision to go ahead and publish it has effectively ended their (formerly friendly) relationship.

It's a silly idea to begin with. Out of an entire roll of film, even of a master like Cartier-Bresson, how many images are publishable and how many are forgettable?

This is a sad exercise by Mr. Duncan to cash in on the famed reclusiveness of his subject.

The Complete Guide to Planning Your Family Reunion
Published in Paperback by Cleve Coast Enterprises (February, 1993)
Author: Ed E. Duncan
Average review score:

Some books on planning can be too basic; this is one of them
This book is published by a vanity press. Its contents would amount to an average size essay save for the fact that every page is double spaced including examples of forms and questionnaires. There are many questionable assumptions best demonstrated by the author's claim that most family reunions are planned around summer holidays! Perhaps I was looking for a little more substantive suggestions than provided by this book which takes one through the most basic of basics in planning. Fully one-third of its 83 double-spaced pages is taken up by sample forms and illustrations.

Cut-And-Make Pop-Up Cards
Published in Accessory by Dover Pubns (October, 1998)
Author: Duncan Birmingham
Average review score:

Don't buy this book for yourself!!
The website does not show the details of the book . And it does not tell you that the book is just only for kids! The pictures are old fashion, not interesting. If you are looking for a making cards book, you should try the book that shows the details of book.
I disappointed about this book very very much.

Flowers for Your Wedding: A Practical and Inspirational Guide to Creating Beautiful Flower Designs
Published in Hardcover by Southwater Pub (August, 2001)
Authors: Kally Ellis, Ercole Moroni, and James Duncan
Average review score:

SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!
This is the second book I have bought written by these authors (Kally Ellis & Ercole Moroni). The first book I bought was full of outdated, useless pictures. I thought the cover picture on this book looked attractive and decided to give these authors another shot. You can't imagine my surprise when I found out that this was the same exact book as the first one, page for page, with the only difference being the title and cover. Same outdated, outlandish, and unuseable pictures of bouquets and headpieces. I have worked on many weddings, and haven't ever had a bride use any of the ideas in this book. I don't even show it anymore. The ideas presented are laughable to most people. I can't imagine a greater waste of money then buying this book has been.

Introducing Lead Guitar: With CD
Published in Paperback by Koala Publications (April, 1997)
Author: Brett Duncan
Average review score:

this book is a mess - AVOID!!
It is sold as a beginner book and even though I've been taking guitar lessons for about half a year I've found exercises 2 and 3 very hard and frustrating. Not because of their complexity, simply because they were recorded on the CD with an impossoble tempo.
Then #4 is almost ridiculously simple. Anybody who can get through 2 and 3 without throwing their guitar out the window can play #4 half asleep.
exercise #5 in the book doesn't match #5 on the CD.
In #6 the first two lines match the CD the 3rd doesn't.
and it goes on and on...

I only wonder why Amazon doesn't have a zero star rating. This book is simply horrible. Do yourself a favor and don't even go near it.

Managing High-Tech Start-Ups (The Electronic Business Series)
Published in Hardcover by Butterworth-Heinemann (November, 1992)
Authors: Duncan MacVicar, Darwin Throne, and Darwin Thorne
Average review score:

Too generic, not detailed enough for high tech startups
This book is more oriented toward small business startups in general, and doesn't provide enough specifics on details facing high tech startups. I didn't learn anything new from it.

Modern Combat Blades : The Best In Edged Weaponry
Published in Hardcover by Paladin Press (May, 1900)
Author: Duncan Long
Average review score:

Simply disappointing
The author claims to be expert in combat blades. Having read his book, I must doubt this claim. I think his neither understands much of knifes nor of knive fighting. Beside some useful hints and stories that you may also find in other books on the subject, the all over impression of this book is disappointing. Trying to sell replicas of antique swords - such as the gladius or the rapier - as modern means of self defense is simply ridiculous. This is the 21st century and not the age of Spartacus or D'Artagnan! Moreover his evaluation criteria for the blades are very inconsistant and vary in the different chapters of the book. The book is full of statements (for example: the western art of fencing is superior to asian traditions) that seem to be subjective judgements. The author would have done well in using scrutinized facts instead. If you are interested in bying a good guide on combat blades you should rather try 'Battle blades' by Greg Walker.

Official Netscape One Book: Create Integrated, Platform-Independent Web Applications
Published in Paperback by Ventana Communications Group Inc. (February, 1997)
Authors: Luke Duncan and Sean Michaels
Average review score:

Get William Stanek's Netscape ONE Developer's Guide instead!
When you get a book that is supposed to be straight from the source "official" you expect fairly comprehensive coverage of the issue and perhaps a few insider tips. Well, don't expect any of that from this book! The Official Netscape ONE Book is officially a BUST...

The authors discuss Netscape ONE from a user's point of view and don't really get into using the technologies. As a result, you end up with an expensive and long-winded press release...Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

The best book I've found covering Netscape ONE is Netscape ONE Developer's Guide written by William Stanek, who is in my humble opinion THE best computer book writer out there--at least he knows what he is talking about and takes the time to present what he talks about in a way that is intelligent and enjoyable. Spitfire into battle
Published in Unknown Binding by J. Murray ()
Author: W. G. G. Duncan Smith
Average review score:

What a bore
Of the countless dozen WW2 air combat memoirs I have read, this must be one of the dullest ever. The author manages to take the reader through the entire war without once managing to make the action exciting enough for us to care what happens to him. "I got up, got into the plane, got to fighting altitude, got a German in my sights and got a few shots off at him," is about as thrilling as it gets. This book is just awful -- so much potential and such a pathetic end result.

Survival Bartering

Author: Duncan Long

Keep your money instead of buying this book!!
Survival Bartering is a very elementary book. Everything contained in its covers should already be common knowledge and common sense..The best survival bartering you can do is to KEEP YOUR MONEY and buy something else!
